For Lent

Intentional Lent Community Now Forming

Lent begins Wednesday, March 2 and runs through Saturday, April 16 until sundown.

Dear Friends,
What would it take for you to have an intentional, soul-refreshing LENT?  What would make the 40 days before Easter feel like a time of deepening your connection with God and with God’s people? There are many ways to observe the season; the Ash Wednesday readings suggest prayer, fasting, alms-giving, and of course, service.  The benefits come from doing SOMETHING on a regular basis, as a practice or DISCIPLINE.

This is your invitation to participate in an INTENTIONAL LENTEN COMMUNITY.  In the spirit of LOGOS and old-fashioned Wednesday night suppers, I am offering to lead a time of reflection from 7-8 pm on Wednesdays beginning March 2 (Ash Wednesday) and ending April 13 (Wednesday in Holy Week). I have chosen a book of daily meditations on spirituals, Never Said a Mumbalin’ Word,* because it celebrates the music of our African-American sisters and brothers, and bears witness to their faith in the face of great suffering.  I am planning to offer this on Zoom so that more people can participate. You can order a book directly from Amazon or we will provide one from church. Feel free to invite someone new: friends, neighbors, family members are all welcome!!
Please TEXT your email address to Mary-Jo at 570-470-3191 if you are willing to make a commitment to this series.
Maybe Wednesday evenings don’t work for you, or perhaps you cannot face one more Zoom meeting!! There are many other ways to observe Lent and prepare for Easter.  Attached to this letter is a list of other possibilities, including things you may already be doing.   Please think and pray about your Lenten practice, and then share it – no names needed – by sending the tear-off back to church.  We will dedicate the responses in the weekly offering.

Thanks, with blessings.

INTENTIONAL LENT   -- Lots of options

Could you
  • serve or clean up after the monthly Sunday meals (resuming 3/27?)
  • write one letter a week or call someone who is alone?
  • prepare and deliver a meal to a sick or elderly neighbor?
  • have a  weekly mindful meal (no TV, phones, interruptions), taking time to think about the food, those who grew it, packed it, drove it, shelved it
  • create a piece of art weekly to share with someone?
  • Sing in the choir: we may be singing some spirituals
  • Pray for 10 minutes a day in quiet – even while driving to work
  • eat a meatless meal once a week and donate the savings to a food pantry
  • choose one world “hot spot” each week to learn and pray about?
  • add your idea here ___________________________________

Vestry invites you to observe an INTENTIONAL LENT.  Please share your intention using the form below. These will be shared anonymously. Your submission will be dedicated along with others in the weekly offering.
