Talking about Racism: A Community Conversation

Community members are invited to join in the conversation through a series of presentations followed by question and answer sessions held via Zoom on Thursdays from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. beginning October 1. Civil Conversation in Uncivil Times: Practicing Our Faith in the Public Square with Ray Suarez
On October 12, 2020 students from around the world can begin taking a free, online class to help people of faith and their communities better understand the dynamics at play in this year’s elections and to learn how to respond faithfully.
Click here to register for this 45-minute course:
https://www.churchnext.tv/library/civil-conversations-in-uncivil-times-practicing-our-faith-in-the-public-square/176891/about/
The United States is entering what may be the most contentious election cycle in modern times. People around the world are worried and seeking direction. Journalist Ray Suarez, who has covered national politics for decades with the Public Broadcasting System, Al Jeerez, and Public Radio International, has done so as a person of faith. As a devout Episcopalian, he brings a helpful and reasoned viewpoint into how Christians might move through this time with grace, respect, and hope.
“I think our nation is at a critical point right now,” said Mr. Suarez, “We’ve never seen such contention and division, however I do think there is a way Christians can faithfully navigate these waters.”
In this course, Suarez gives us four presentations: the challenge of civility, scripture and civility, what civility might look like, and how we might get there.
The Big Class is a series of video lectures, quizzes, and discussions. No special software is required. It will take an average learner about 45 minutes to complete. Registration is free and open to all. Click here for more information and to register, there you’ll find resources for congregational use, including downloadable posters, bulletin inserts and a Launch Guide.
This free class is brought to you by The Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Church Foundation, Trinity Wall Street, the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes, Forward Movement, and ChurchNext.

A Weekly Quotation from Listening Hearts Ministries: [Humble people] are able to dispassionately assess their strengths without lapsing into self-glorification. Similarly, as they come to realize that every human being is fallible, they can accept their own weaknesses without falling prey to self-debasement and, at the same time, become less inclined to judge others. They find themselves able to accept criticism without becoming defensive and willingly submit to the Holy Spirit as they consider critical comments. Humble people are neither strident nor servile, but speak and act with serene confidence that God’s purpose is being served.

Paul teaches that the word of faith is a gift. I wonder if faith is a gift we give to God or if faith is a gift God offers to us. Through faith in/with/from a God of love, we learn righteousness – goodness, virtue, decency, worthiness. There are many things we do and think because of faith: giving of gifts, supporting causes, seeing all people as worthy and beloved. Is our faith strong enough to get out of the boat? Is our faith firm enough to anticipate love from others? Is our faith big enough to invite others to share worship together? Is our faith wide enough to forgive?

A Prayer for Graduates: God of knowledge and understanding, you gave to the student Elisha a double portion of his teacher’s spirit: grant that all whose graduations we celebrate today may embody the best of their teachers’ heart, mind, and body, building on their knowledge and understanding, and putting to right and compassionate use all that they have gained from their time in school; through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Teacher. Amen.
Who is ready to listen for the Spirit together?
"When people gather intent upon centering in God and listening to one another, they fashion an atmosphere of hospitality to the Spirit. The potential for being touched by God’s truth and wisdom is heightened. In the company of the Spirit, the potential of the group far exceeds what the individuals together bring to it."

Our house is a house of prayer for all regardless of your age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical and/or mental abilities. We welcome everyone.
